Leaders in artificial intelligence in Canada believe that the country’s tech companies should view the frenzy surrounding a conversational AI created by the Chinese startup DeepSeek as evidence that there is still room for innovation.
Julien Billot, CEO of the Canadian collective Scale AI, states that there is a tendency to think the game is over, as many U.S. AI companies have achieved early success and have since invested billions in this technology.
With DeepSeek’s AI assistant performing as well as, if not better than, its rival OpenAI’s ChatGPT, Mr. Billot believes that Canadian companies should feel that more breakthroughs are possible and that they do not necessarily have to come from the United States.
He argues that Canada has a rich history and strengths in AI, which provides it with an excellent opportunity to disrupt the AI world.
Aidan Gomez, CEO of Cohere, Canada’s AI darling, seems to share this view, stating that the future of AI does not rely on unlimited resources, but on smart and efficient solutions.
He contends that Cohere has long believed in this, but the message is finally resonating across the entire industry.
